Along with hundreds of others, Don Eck and his family will ride next Sunday, September 29 in Mortenson Construction’s Blood, Sweat & Tears Charity Bike Ride to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

For the second straight year, Don, 71, will ride to celebrate his survival of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), an often lethal form of blood cancer. In between last year’s Blood, Sweat & Tears event and this year, Don endured numerous complications from the disease, but he continues to regain his strength and stamina. At the 2013 event, Don will ride alongside his wife and be honored as an inspiration to all who participate to help people with blood cancers.

Rockford Light The Night Walk raises funds, awareness to help fight blood cancers

LTN_FootprintGraphicThe 2013 Rockford Light The Night Walk will take place on Saturday, September 28 at 5:00 pm next to Peak Sports Club in Loves Park. The annual non-competitive, two-mile fundraising walk is organized by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) to raise funds for blood cancer research and patient support programs. There will be activities for kids, a deejay and food so bring family and friends to support our mission.

After a short inspirational stage program at 6:45 pm, the Walk will begin at sundown. As participants walk the route, they carry illuminated balloons that dot the night sky – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember those we have lost to blood cancer.

This year’s Rockford Light The Night Walk is special because it takes place on the last weekend of the month of September, which is recognized as Blood Cancer Awareness Month. There are no means of prevention or early detection for most forms of blood cancer, so LLS raises awareness to raise urgency about the need to continue to invest in research that funds cures.

Thanks to funds raised at events like Light The Night, LLS has given nearly $1 billion to innovative research projects since 1949, with survival rates for many forms of blood cancer doubling, tripling or even quadrupling in that time. LLS is also the leading source of free information, patient support and education for people with blood cancer. In Illinois, the Be Your Own Advocate (BYOA) program provides newly diagnosed patients with a free, interactive resource book to help them take charge of their treatment.
